What is an Agility Hurdle?
A type of moveable light fence or obstacles or barriers which are placed at a certain distance and to be jumped by the athletes is called hurdle. Most agility hurdles are 6? or 12? above the ground. This forces athletes to raise their feet and concentrate more on their footwork. In addition, higher hurdles help with the initial quick motion needed for fast martial arts kicks.
What are the uses of Agility Hurdles?
Agility hurdles are used in drills during sports training with the goal of improving an athlete?s ability to change direction and accelerate while already moving. Agility is essential to many sports, especially team sports such as basketball, volleyball, rugby, water polo, handball, cricket, baseball, tennis, hockey etc.
For example, football players need to change direction quickly when they see that an opposing player will tackle him or when trying to get to a ball first. Tennis players also must change direction with speed when dashing to reach a ball that is going in a different way than they expected.
Jumping and turning in the air during drills helps with passing balls during a game, but it can also add to strength in any sport. Doing side jumps and jumping front to back help players change direction mid-jump. Jumping over things allows players to pass hurdles or avoid downed teammates. These exercises can be done with hurdles.
Agility training helps martial arts students to quickly maneuver and change positions/stances. This allows martial artists to evade an attack or launch a strike at undefended area i.e. moving laterally in order to avoid an opponent?s blow and thus being able to quickly launch an effective counter attack against an off-balance opponent. This is an essential element in a self-defense scenario or sparring match.
